Hong Kong Allows Soccer Betting
HONG KONG – As reported by the Associated Press: “Hong Kong’s gamblers would be able to bet legally on soccer matches under a law put forward by the government as a way to raise millions of dollars in revenue.
“The new gambling bill was introduced into Hong Kong’s Legislative Council on Wednesday, despite warnings from opponents that it will lead to widespread gambling addiction.
“The government typically gets whatever it wants from the legislature that critics say is unfairly stacked in favour of big business and pro-Beijing interests.
“…Home Affairs Secretary Patrick Ho told the legislature that while the bill does not address the morality of wagering, it would help rid the territory of underground bookmakers who now take illegal bets on domestic and international soccer matches.
“…Currently, Hong Kong only allows betting on horse racing and a numbers-game lottery, run as monopolies by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, a non-profit body that the government has proposed would also handle the soccer betting for at least five years. Police rounded up dozens of Hong Kong bookmakers during the World Cup soccer tournament last June. Many argue that since gambling can’t be stopped, taxpayers and charities funded by the Jockey Club might as well benefit…”
